Lincoln County commissioners on Monday officially set special election dates for the office of sheriff. Interim Sheriff Chuck Mangion was appointed sheriff by commissioners in October after elected Sheriff Paul Coffey was deemed ineligible to serve and resigned. The winning candidate in the special election will fill the remaining two years on Coffey’s term, then the office of sheriff will be up for re-election on its normal cycle in 2012. The special election will coincide with the county’s other 2010 elections. The filing period for candidates will be June 7-9. The primary election will be July 27, and if needed, a run-off is scheduled Aug. 24. The general election will be Nov. 2. Coffey, elected by voters in November 2008, had to resign as sheriff because he couldn’t complete his peace officer certification from the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training, which ruled him ineligible to serve. Coffey, who cited health issues for the incomplete, was required to have certification within six months of taking office. Despite two extensions and a request by county commissioners for any type of exemptions, a ruling was made by the district attorney that Coffey must forfeit the office. During his swearing in ceremony, Mangion said he would fill the post until a new sheriff could be elected. At that time, he said he wasn’t planning on running for the office.
